Rider Interviews

Dec 28, 2007

How was it filming for the new Gator Boards film Transgression?

Ryan Doyle: Inspiring. Traveling and riding and working with such talented people all with one goal, one sight, inspired me to be a better rider.

Keith Lidberg: I would have to say that filming for Transgression was quite a production. I have never been a part of something so important as riding in front of Ronn's camera for the GB team vid. We had another chance to travel the world and experience different cultures. That was easily the best part of this experience. Another experience that I think a lot of riders would overlook mainly because we are around this everyday but the opportunity to get together and grow as a team was an unparalleled experience. Being able to see other teammates outlooks on what we do for a living definitely stood out in my mind!

Randall, how do you feel about being named wakerider of the year?

Randall Harris: WAKE RIDER of the year was a huge blessing. I was shocked. It's all God. I can't take credit for any of it. God gave me a near prophetic vision and he supplied me with everything and everybody I needed to see it through. Now I have more to live up to than ever before and this means I have to lean on the lord more than ever. I do best fighting to get to the top. Now that I'm at the top of this little world of wakeboarding I have to dig deeper to stay on top and keep moving up. I'm exhausted though.

Ryan, tell us about hitting the kinked rail in Thailand.

Ryan Doyle: Hahaha the kinked rail. Well it was the last night we where in Chang Rai. Nobody had tried the big kink rail and it was our last night. I was talking with the owner Gilles Becker. Basically he bet me I couldn’t do the rail and I said I could. So he set up a bunch of lights because it was like 11:00 pm. The top of the rail was plywood with fiberglass on it and then painted white. So needless to say it was a bit sticky. After grinding a bunch of white paint into my board I stuck it. I’d like to think I inspired Lidberg a little, because in the morning before we went to the airport Lidberg slayed that rail.

What do you like aout being a part of the Gator Board family?

Ryan Doyle: Let me count the ways. Gator lets me be the rider I want to be. Supports me in everything I do. Lets me design my boards and he sees the value in having me on the team. Plus everyone on the team is cool as $#!%, so what more could anyone ask for in a board company.

Gator: Traveling with friends around the world, to different countries and cultures has its way of bringing people together in ways nothing else can quite the same.

Randall, how was it eating bugs in Thailand?

Randall Harris: The fried crickets Wes and I ate were cool. The sour lil ant egg things I ate were cool. The humungous hissing cockroaches,...... death! Never, I repeat, never attempt to eat one of those things unless the objective is to expel everything from your stomach onto the floor via jet propulsion.

Looking back what is something from making this movie that you will never forget?

Ryan Doyle: Jumping on my board to take a set or hit some crazy stunt. Having Ronn Seidenglanz with his huge film camera finding an angle to best show what I’m doing, while Josh Lechworth does the same with two or three cameras close by. My team members standing by giving me nothing but respect and support, and my boss, the legend, the man making all of this possible standing humbly amongst us all smiling contently like a father watching his sons doing something they love.

Gator: Randall’s bloody heel after bomb droppen the 15+ ft ledge, long plane flights, strange food, unbelievable unforgettable scenery.
Randall Harris: I was able to travel the world and work alongside my closest homies. I almost let this aspect of my life slip away so the whole experience was surreal. I got to create something awesome with my brothers Ronn, Erik, and Ricky G. I was blessed by the presence of Gerry Nunn. I re-ignited some old friendships with homies like Mark Weikel, Wes Briscoe, Drew M., and Steve Edwards. In addition I've developed relationships with new friends like Ryan doyle, Matt Manzari, keith Lidberg, Kyle Rattray, and Steve Cambell. This paragraph sounds like a damn miss America speech but it's true. I'm so fortunate to have had the experience I've had making this movie with these people. I cherish and will never forget those times.

Keith Lidberg: Gators humor and Ronn’s ability to convince you to
do things you never thought you could!

Keith, how does it feel to be rail rider of the year?

Keith Lidberg: To be honest a little crazy. I set out this year for this award, seeing as I had missed out on the same
award the previous two years. I didn't fully expect to win as I know how much competition there was this
year. I would have to say that I did everything I could have done this year to win that award so it made
my year to be recognized for that dedication and effort. No feeling will ever compare to standing in
front of the entire industry for my first time accepting an award that so many people supported me
accepting for so long!

What are you working on now?

Randall: Just tryin to avoid gettin wrapped up in the game too tight. I had an amazing year career wise through the grace of God. Now I am re-evaluating my situation and trying to put together a plan of attack for the coming year. Do I do it all over again or do I become a monk? I've also been riding as much as possible behind my new Malibu. It's ill. We call her the Red Pearl. I've been down on the dock everyday parlayin with the skiers. I have a vision where skiers and wakeboarders can live peacefully in harmony together.

Doyle: Well I just got back from a two-week tour through Japan. I’m in Ontario right now chilling and working out getting my body healthy and strong to head to Australia in January. I might go to the Philippines in November Pat’s there working on some crazy stuff it would be cool to visit him. I’m just staying on it, living everyday.

Randall, tell us about the rats in your hut in Bali eating your Reeses Peanut Butter Cups.

Randall Harris: At first glance our hut in Bali appeared to be a dreamy, quaint, lil spot to getaway for just the two of us (Matt Manzari and I). The fact that my bed was actually a rats version of LA Fitness quickly turned our oasis into the terror dome. Matt and I were forced to rip the mattresses off the beds, push them together in the center of the room, sleep fully clothed (socks and shoes included), with recently purchased Thai knives in hand. We awoke and took a quick once over of our physiques to make sure nothing sustained damage. Everything appeared to be in tact and we thought we were home free. But as I approached my back pack to retreat our hearty breakfast of candy and cookies I was taken aback by the horryifying sight that lay in front of me. My back pack had been unzipped and victim to ransackery! The lil bucktoothed bastards actually unzipped my back pack, opened the bag of candy, unwrapped and partially ate some of my sacred and oh so cherished source of nutrition: my Reeses Cups!! They left a trail of evidence as mockery to stomp my already downtrodden soul.

What video part stands out in your mind?
Randall: Everybody's part stands out to me. I'll tell you four tricks that stand out in my head. First off Ryan Doyle's night boardslide across that huge sketchy rail in Thailand. You gotta understand I hadn't kicked it with Doyle too much up to this time. when he hit that rail and wadded, then got up and wadded again, and again, and again, I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I think about that all the time when I can't land something or I don't have the courage to try. He really inspired me. Respect level for Doyle as a rider went way up that day. My respect level for Doyle as a person has even exceeded that. The determination in his eyes that completely canceled out any possibility of defeat. He's not Canadian, he's a damn Spartan. Second, Matt Manzari's underflip. I mean, what the? Who the? how the? Third, Keith Lidberg's head high ollie to completely annihilating and defacing that poor helpless rail in the calm morning waters of Lake Picket. Was that even possible? Again, level of respect risen to the top. Fourth, Steve Edwards' indy crow 3! Does anybody realize how hard that is? And the dude is so nonchalant about it. You would think he's a damn janitor not one of the best wakeboarders in the world.

Anything else you want to add?

Keith Lidberg: I will never forget the feeling of having Ronn basically convincing me I would be fine to do the land gap. By far the most dangerous and unknown feeling I have come across in the past years. Please don't try that at home...it sucks when you fall!

Doyle: Transgression is a powerful wakeboard and wakeskate movie. It’s a story that focuses on different artistic angles, exotic locations, and innovative riding. I had the time of my life filming for it. I can’t wait for everyone to see it.

Gator: Jesus loves you. John 3:16
We want to give thanks to Troy and Arian too….you guys rule.

Traveling

May 2, 2007

Have you ever done nothing but travel the globe and wakeboard with your friends for 6 months?  I have and we happened to do a lil filmin along the way.  Transgression is the outcome.  Those friends of mine are some of the best wakeboarders and wakeskaters in existence.  You might have heard of a few of em....Keith Lidberg, Ryan doyle, Kyle Rattray Drew Mcguckin, Gerry Nunn, Tim Kovacich.....any of those names ringin a bell?  Maybe some of these GB OG's will spark your interest Ricky Gonzales, Mark Weikel, Wes Briscoe, and Steve Edwards.  And last but not least, Transgression introduces a new family member, Matt Manzari.  Sidewayz holds the paint brush, the GB team is the ink, and our many canvases include Florida, California, Mexico, Singapore, Thailand, Bali, Dominican Republic and more.  We poured blood, sweat, and tears in to this masterpiece.  This is one you must have hanging on your flat screen.
